Monster Story Marathon!

Monster Story Marathon: A Writing Competition

It's a monster story marathon that you won't want to miss

The "monster movie" is something that's fascinated people for generations - they’re the stories of what goes bump in the night, the things that lurk in the back of our nightmares, stories of ghosts, werewolves, vampires, zombies, Cthulhu and so much more. But monsters are not just things that lurk in the darkness - they can also be hidden among us, staying just out of sight. They can be secret societies masked in magic and mystery. They can be you, or me, or the mysterious boy in dark clothing who sits in the back of the classroom and disappears at odd times...

That's the thing with monster movies - the possibilities are endless. Monster-lore can be bent, re-shaped, and given whole new meaning. Fandoms who've long eclipsed can have new life breathed into them. And the classic monster movie has evolved; now, a zombie movie can be a love story like Warm Bodies. Mythological creatures can be hidden in modern day society like Percy Jackson. It goes from classic horror movies like Dracula to modern supernatural fiction featuring magic, ghosts, and everything in between.

Whether you want to write a classic story that stays true to the history of monsters or re-invent the monster story into something new, this competition is a place to delve deep into the world of monsters. So pick your monster—or multiple monsters—and shape them as you will; their fate is up to you.

How to Participate

To take part in the writing competition, you must choose one of the categories below. If you're writing, your entry can be a fanfiction, regular story, poem, oneshot, etc. The categories are:

Write a monster story that's really a love story.

Imagine if the character you least expect to be the monster, turns out to be it in the end... And your romance doesn't have to have a happy ending either, it can be a Shakespearean tragedy.

Write a monster story that's really a fanfiction.

We <3 fanfics that surprise, when the bad boy turns out to be a monster... Or the neighbor you always suspected is a mad scientist who's created a monster straight from your fandom.

Create a cover/fanart/trailer inspired by monsters.

Tired of writing? You can still enter the competition by designing a monster cover, creating fanart, even making a trailer. We like to see creative kinds of entries inspired by the monster theme too!

The winning entries will be shared on Movellas' social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc.)

Best Monster Story will receive the first three books in the Jackaby series by William Ritter that includes Beastly Bones, or a $20 Amazon gift card.

The Runner Up will receive a hardcover copy of A Taste for Monsters by Matthew Kirby, or a $15 Amazon gift card!

Best Cover/Fanart/Trailer will receive a hardcover copy of Fear the Drowning Deep, or a $15 Amazon gift card.

So kick up your feet, grab some popcorn, and get ready for a Monster Story Marathon!
