A Heck of a Valentine's Day, Indeed (1Shot41D)

Sweet Anabelle has been battling cancer for the past year with no sign of improvement and yet another holiday has come, but it isn't your average holiday. When Anabelle receives a special surprise given to her by her best friend, she forgets the past year and just focuses on the moment. A moment she will never forget.

1. A Heck of a Valentine's Day, Indeed

A year and nothing is getting better. The cancer has spread and they said I might not make it past the end of April. If I had my way, I’d still be running around and playing at school with the rest of the ten year olds, but you can’t always get what you wish for.

“Anabelle?” my mother whispered as I fluttered my eyes open. “How’re you feeling, hun?”

“Could be worse. I feel pretty good today apart from the slight pounding in my head.” I answered truthfully.

“Do you wanna take something for that?” she worried.

“I’m good.”

I scanned the room and noticed that it looked more cheerful than usual. There were bouquets of roses everywhere and bright pink balloons. It wasn’t my birthday yet, so that wasn’t it. I looked to my left and saw that the window was slightly ajar; I could feel the cool February wind blowing through the curtains. As I turned my head, one of the balloons slightly turned so the flat surface was pointed toward me. ‘Happy Valentine’s Day’ was written across in curly red letters.

“Jeremy brought the balloons earlier.” My mother interrupted my thoughts.

“Jeremy?” I asked while cocking my head to the side.

“Yeah, that one boy from your class last year that brought you your favorite books a week ago.”

“He said that he’d be back and that he had a surprise for you.” My mother said, a smile tugging at the corner of her lips.

“What kind of surprise?” I asked with a raised eyebrow.

“You’ll see. Now get some rest, you look a little tired.”

I nodded and closed my eyes. I got as comfortable as I could in the hospital bed. My mother held my hand and carefully ran her thumbs across the top, afraid she might hurt me. Then she softly and slowly began to sing one of my favorite songs.

Wake up, we both need to wake up
Maybe if we face up to this
We can make it through this
Closer, maybe we'll be closer
Stronger than we were before, yeah
Make this something more, yeah.

I heard my mother’s voice starting to shake through the verses, remembering why this is my song. Why it means so much. “We can make it through this.” I might not know what the rest of the song is really about, but I do know that I can make it if I try.

“Anabelle?” my mother whispered as she shook me gently.

I took in a deep breath and opened my eyes. My mother softly smiled and turned to look at the door. I followed her eyes and landed on a giant box in the corner of the room.

“What’s that?” I asked.

“Jeremy?” my mother called.

“Hello, Belle!” he said as he came around the box and walked to the bed.

“Hey, Jeremy! It’s been a week!” I replied enthusiastically.

“It feels like ages!”

“I know!”

“Well, first off, I have something for you.” He handed me a bouquet of white roses and a fluffy unicorn. I took them and set them on my lap.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, Belle!” he blushed.

“Thanks Jeremy! I love the unicorn! I’m going to name him Louis!” I said while he gave me a careful hug.

“Of course you would!”

“Achoo!” I heard from behind them.

“What was that?” I asked Jeremy.

“Umm…” my mother shrugged.

“That? That’s your surprise.”

I looked at him curiously as he handed me a remote with a giant red button.

“Press it.” He urged.

I slowly pressed the button, afraid of what might happen. When I let go, I heard music start to play. We all looked at the giant box as someone ripped through the paper. He stumbled out and quickly brushed himself off. He stood in front of us with a shy smile and shrugged his shoulders.

“It was hot in there.” He said.

I sat there with my eyes popping out of my skull as I watched his every move. He gave me a toothy grin and a little wave. I felt my pulse start to quicken and the monitor started to beep like crazy. I looked from Jeremy to my mother to the guy standing right in front of me. I didn’t know what to say. What would I say!?

“Anabelle, this is Louis Tomlinson. Louis Tomlinson, this is the one and only, Anabelle Brooks.” Jeremy said.

Louis stepped forward with his hands behind his back and made his way beside my bed, near me, close enough to actually touch him. I starred on in awe as he stood right beside me, taking in all his features. Those blue eyes and that brown hair that I’ve always dreamed of seeing in real life and not just on my posters. I looked over at Jeremy and he encouraged me to say something. I turned my attention back to Louis.

“Allo, Love! A little birdy told me that you like One Direction.” He said in that British accent of his.

I nodded my head, still starstruck by him.

“I’ve got something for you.” He whispered to me playfully. He handed me a bouquet of cake pops and a bag. I took them and just looked at him.

“Thank you.” I whispered.

“Open it!” he encouraged.

I did as he said and opened the bag. Inside was their latest album signed by all five members with a small message written by each. There was also a t-shirt and a small box. I grabbed it and set the other things aside. I undid the clasp and opened the box.

“Will you be my Valentine, Anabelle?” it said on the top. Inside was a necklace with an incomplete pendant. It had the letters “S-t-r-e”.

“So will you be my Valentine?” he asked.

“Of course I will!” I finally found my voice.

“Yay! I don’t know what I’d do if you said no!” he joked.

“Where’s the other half?” I asked him while taking the necklace out.

“I have it. That way when you see this you’ll remember to be strong and I will too.” He whispered. He reached into his shirt and pulled his out over his collar. His had the letters “n-g-t-h”. Together, they spelled “Strength”. I smiled at him.

“May I?” he asked.

I nodded and he took the necklace from my hands. I sat up straight as he reached behind me and fastened it around my neck. He gave me a soft hug and a kiss on my forehead. He pulled away and sat on the bed along with Jeremy. My mother sat on a chair beside us.

“Wait, how?” I asked.

“Oh, well, Jeremy, here, sent in a letter and a video about you. Anabelle, you’ve inspired us to not take things for granted and to stay strong. Your story inspired us to do as much as we can and help others like you have. You’re my hero, Anabelle.” He said sincerely.

“Thank you, but I’m not all that.” I shrugged.

“Oh yes you are! You’re amazing and you’re my valentine.” He said.

I smiled as he took my hand.

“Oh, and there’s one more surprise.” Jeremy said.

“Another one?” I asked.

“Yes! No c’mon! We’re going on a little field trip to the arts room!” Louis said enthusiastically.

My mother got up and grabbed the wheel chair from the closet. She pushed it over to the side of the bed as Louis helped me get into it. He took control and I was scared for my life! From what I saw from the “Kiss You” and “LWWY” videos, Louis was definitely a crazy driver!

“Don’t worry! I know how to drive these things!” he tried to assure me as we quickly progressed down the hall with my mother worrying the whole way.

“And that’s what worries me!” I joked.

“GASP! What are you trying to say, Belle!?” he mocked.

“I’m scared for my life!” I yelled as we sped through the halls.

I laughed along with Louis as we finally reached the arts room. He slowed down at the entrance and helped me onto the couch that was set in the middle of the room.

“I’ll be back, Valentine!” he said as he gave me a kiss on the forehead and sped out the door.

My mother and Jeremy sat on both sides of me as we waited. Not long after, the lights were turned off and I heard shuffling.

“Ow! You stepped on my foot!” a familiar voice said.

“Sorry.” Louis apologized.

“Ow! That was my foot!” another voice said.

“My bad!” Louis apologized again.

I giggled and waited for them to quit arguing.

“Anabelle?” Louis whispered quite loudly.

“Louis?” I responded.

“Okay, you’re still here.”

“Where would I go?”

“Lights!” another voice said.

The lights came on and there in front of me were five smiling boys. Louis was in the middle with Zayn and Niall on his right and Liam and Harry to his left. I squealed with joy at the sight as they all waved at me. I looked over at my mom and Jeremy and they were just as starstruck.

“Allo!” they all said in unison.

“Happy Valentine’s day!” Harry said.

“She’s mine!” Louis interjected.

“I know that!”

“Boys, shall we start?” Liam said as he adjusted the microphone in front of him.

They nodded and Niall started playing the guitar. Then they started to sing my song.

Circles, we’re going in circles
Dizzy’s all it makes us
We know where it takes us
We've been before
Closer, maybe looking closer
There's more to discover
Find out what went wrong without blaming each other

Think that we got more time
When we're falling behind
Gotta make up our minds

Or else we'll play, play, play all the same old games
And we wait, wait, wait for the end to change
And we take, take, take it for granted that we’ll be the same
But we're making all the same mistakes…

The song continued and I sang along. It was amazing to just see them there in person. Harry winked at me! Louis stood and came over to me. He sang Liam’s part, but I didn’t mind. He smiled and I smiled back, my Valentine.

When the song ended, we applauded and the boys came and pulled a few stools in front of us. We talked for what seemed like hours, just talking about random things and fooling around. This was the first time in a while that my mom actually looked like she was having a good time. I mean, I was having the best time of my life talking to my idols! I just wish it could’ve lasted longer. Soon, Jeremy had to leave and it was just my mom and me.

The boys sang a few more songs for the rest of the kids at the hospital and dedicated each one to me. I felt special. When it was all over, Louis and the boys accompanied us to my room. Niall, Louis, Liam and Harry sat on the bed and ate my chocolates while my mom and Zayn talked about me, I think.

“Who gave you the turtle?” Liam and Harry said in unison once they spotted my stuffed animal.

“My mom gave it to me for Christmas.” I answered.

“What’s his name?” Niall asked.

“Umm…you know…don’t judge me if I tell you!” I said.

“Is it named after one of us?” Louis teased me.

“Maybeeee.” I responded.

“And his name is?” Harry asked.

“I named him Niall.”

“Yay! I have a twin!” Niall exclaimed.

“What!? But you’re my Valentine!” Louis whined.

“I know! That’s why my unicorn is named Louis!” I defended.

“What about us?” Harry and Liam said.

“Chocolate?” I offered them as I held out the box.

“Nice save.” Harry muttered as they both took another chocolate.

“Okay, boys. That’s enough excitement for one day.” My mother said.

“But, mom!” we all whined jokingly.

“I never knew I had five boys.” My mom teased.

“Fine.” They muttered.

“It was nice meeting you.” Liam said while giving me a hug.

“I love you! Take care of my brother.” Niall joked while giving me a hug also.

“You owe me.” Harry teased as he bent down and kissed my cheek.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, love.” Zayn whispered while handing me an envelope. He gave me a hug and then Louis was the only one left.

“I don’t wanna go yet!” he whined.

“I know you don’t but Anabelle has to rest.” My mother said.

“Fine, but you better write to me every single day! If you don’t, I WILL find out and I’ll have to come over here and kick your butt! Oh, and Happy Valentine’s Day, Valentine!” he said dramatically.

I laughed as he came over to me and gave me a gentle squeeze. He kissed my forehead and gave me a nod.

“And remember, I’ll always be with you no matter where in the world I might be. Have strength.” He whispered as he connected our pendants.

“I will.” I promised.

“Do you swear?” he asked playfully.

“I swear!”

“Do you pinky swear?”

“I pinky swear!”

“Do you swear on both Nialls?”

“Yes! I swear on the Nialls! Cross my heart and hope to stay strong!” I laughed.

“That’s my Valentine!”

He gave me one last squeeze before they all had to leave.

“What’s that?” my mom asked when they left. I looked down and saw the envelope Zayn had given me. I opened it and took out a card. There was a sticky note on it that said :

“We made this for you. Listen to track number three first. That one was mine. : )Take care, Anabelle. ~Zayn :) xx”

“What is it?” my mom asked.

“It’s a mixed tape of songs they recorded but didn’t make it onto their album.” I responded in shock.

“Well that was sweet of them! This was one heck of a Valentine’s day.”

“A heck of a Valentine’s day, indeed.” I repeated while playing with the pendant around my neck.
