1. The Announcement

Katniss's POV

Me, Prim, and my mother were all gathered in the living room, watching Snow. A boy was handing him a petite box, and Snow opened it. He held out the paper and cleared his throat. "This year, to remind the rebels of our control, all the victors in every District will be entered once again, to be chosen for our tributes. Happy Quarter Quell! And may the odds be ever, in your favor!" As he finished, he smiled. I knew that I for sure would be going back, and I probably wouldn't ever see District 12 again once I was shipped off to the Capitol. My mother started weeping, and Prim joined her. But all I did was sit in awe. That's how much of an uprising I'd caused last year with those berries? That was such a big deal that they decided to send me back into that torture? I wandered into the kitchen and gazed down at Gale. How beat up he was. He was better, but still unconscious. I held his hand and asked him softly, "What am I gonna do?" Then I leaned down and planted a soft kiss on his cheek.

I don't remember falling asleep but when I awoke my hand was still knotted in with Gale's. Peeta was watching us intently while munching on a piece of bread.

Peeta's POV

I couldn't believe my fiancée was sitting there beside that boy! I mean sure they've known each other for at least half their life, but their hands... Katniss looked at me and smiled, then at her and Gale's hands, and gasped, trying to ooze her hand out of his grasp. "I'm--" she started.

"It's okay. I know this has been rough on you." I replied. She walked over and gave me a bear hug. I kissed the top of her head, her hair smelled amazing, like marshmallows and strawberries. I hugged her back, but she then broke us apart. Her faced hardened.

"I'm going to go and see Haymitch. I'll see you later." She walked out the door already dressed in an army green tee and black trousers. I loved that even though she had all this money now, she liked the simple clothing. I escorted her out of her house, saw the flurries overhead, and handed Katniss her big raincoat. She thanked me, then started down the sidewalk to our mentor's house. I shut the door, going back to my own house.
