Double Trouble

Sweet and quiet Harry and sassy and rambunctious Emily Potter have lived their lives with Sirius Black and Remus Lupin ever since their parents, James and Lily, were killed by Voldemort on October 31, 1981. Now, ten years and a few months later, the twins are getting ready for their first year at Hogwarts. But everything is not what it seems.

2. Diagon Alley

"Well, kiddos," Sirius stepped back as the wall split open, turning into a huge archway and revealing a busy, slightly crooked alley. "Welcome to Diagon Alley."

Mackenzie and Harry gaped at everything around them. They'd never been to Diagon Alley; Sirius and Remus had wanted them to be able to have that sense of wonder of seeing it for the first time when going to do their school shopping.

"It's... amazing!" Mackenzie gasped.

"Yeah, it is!" Harry agreed.

"Now, school shopping or birthday presents first?" Remus asked.

"School," Harry and Mackenzie said in unison.

"That way we can look around for the presents while we're shopping." Mackenzie explained.

"That's a good idea." Sirius nodded. "Where to first?"

"Flourish and Blotts," Harry said, as Mackenzie exclaimed, "Gambol and Japes!"

Sirius and Remus laughed.

"What would Gambol and Japes have that's necessary to your school shopping?" Remus asked, smiling.

"Dungbombs are very important for a student to have at Hogwarts." Mackenzie said solemnly.

Sirius, Remus, and Harry laughed again.

"How about we go to Flourish and Blotts?" Remus suggested. "So we can buy the things that are actually on your list."

"Fine." Mackenzie sighed.

After walking for a few minutes, the little group came upon a neat little bookshop with a sign over the door that read "Flourish and Blotts."

"Let's go and get the required books," Remus said, nudging the twins, "And you two can both pick two books to read in your spare time."

"Okay!" The twins exclaimed, hurrying inside the store and heading in opposite directions.

Harry came back with all the required material, (The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 1; A History of Magic; Magical Theory; A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration; One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi; Magical Drafts and Potions; Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them; The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection), along with Quidditch Through the Ages and The Official Guide to the Quidditch World Cup, which Sirius wholeheartedly approved of. Mackenze returned with all the required text, with the additional Curses and Counter-Curses and Easy Spells to Fool Muggles. Remus sighed at Mackenzie's choices, but took them to the counter with Harry's.

After Flourish and Blott's, they went to Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions. Madam Malkin bustled over the moment the door opened.

"Hogwarts?" she asked. "First year?"

"Um, yes." Harry nodded.

"My goodness," Madam Malkin gasped, staring at Harry. "You're Harry Potter!"

"Er, yes, I suppose so." Harry stammered.

Mackenzie snorted.

"I mean, um, yes, I am Harry." Harry shot Mackenzie a glare over his shoulder.

"Well, do come in!" Madam Malkin ushered Harry and Mackenzie both inside. "Let's see, Albert is working with a young man already, but there's Robert who can take care of you, dear," she gestured to Mackenzie, "And I can help you, if that's alright, Mr. Potter." she finished.

"Yeah, uh, that's fine." Harry shot Sirius a look that pleaded for help, but Sirius just shrugged.

Mackenzie stepped up on a stool next to a boy who looked to be about her age, with a pale, pointed face, blonde hair, and grey eyes. He looked at her coolly.

"Hello there." he said, his voice as cold as his expression. "I'm Draco Malfoy."

"I'm-" Mackenzie began to introduce herself, but the boy called Draco Malfoy cut her off.

"I don't care who you are." he snapped. "Are you going to Hogwarts?"

"Yes." Mackenzie did not looked impressed at the way Malfoy was acting. "First year."

"What a coincidence, same here." he said in a bored drawl.

Robert came over and started hemming Mackenzie's robes.

"Well that's just peachy." Mackenzie muttered.

"Excuse me?" Malfoy snapped. "What did you say?"

"I said I like peaches." Mackenzie put on her most sickly-sweet expression and adopted a strange, rather simpering voice. "They're absolutely my favourite, you know. My brother over there hates them, and I can't imagine why. They're amazingly sweet, just like you! I do hope we end up in the same house!"

"That's not likely." Malfoy muttered, looking at her strangely. He did not seem to have realized she was mocking him. "Where are you going?"

"Well, nobody really knows, do they?" Mackenzie asked, still in that simpering voice, beaming at Malfoy.

"Yes, but if you had the choice." Malfoy said impatiently. "I know that I'll be in Slytherin."

"Oh, I don't think I could bear being in Slytherin." Mackenzie shuddered over-dramatically. "All those snakes and slime and scary things in the common room! I do think I'll be going into Hufflepuff, though. They're my absolute favourite House! They're so kind, and loyal, and hardworking, just like you are, I expect."

"Well, you're all done, sir." Albert stood up from Malfoy's hem. "Just take them up to the counter and I'll ring them up for you."

Malfoy looked quite glad to leave the conversation.

As soon as he left, Mackenzie began laughing.

"Well, he'll be a piece of work once we get to school." she said, folding her arms and staring after him.

Harry and Mackenzie both left Madam Malkin's with large bags full of robes, hats, gloves, and cloaks, and headed down the street with Sirius and Remus towards the Apothecary. It was a rather creepy place, Mackenzie thought, full of jars of pickled things floating in slime, and it had a horrid smell. But they were out of there soon enough, with some potions ingredients and cauldrons, crystal phials, and scales. They stopped briefly in Wiseacre's Wizarding Equipment for a telescope, and Scribbulous Writing Instruments for quills, ink, and a set of stationary that Mackenzie begged for. Finally, they stopped at Ollivander's.

Mackenzie went first.

"Ebony, pheonix tail feather, 11 inches, very firm." Ollivander handed her the wand, which she gripped tightly and waved.

The single lamp on the desk exploded in a shower of sparks. Mackenzie jumped rather badly, and quickly handed the wand back.

They went through three more wands, before Ollivander seemed more excited about one than he had about the others.

"I've got a feeling about this one," Ollivander said, taking it out of the box. "Rosewood, unicorn hair, 13 3/4 inches, pleasantly springy."

As Mackenzie took hold of the wand, she felt warmth spread up her arm, and a few gold flames erupted from the end. Remus handed Ollivander seven galleons.

"Now, for Mr. Potter..." Ollivander stared at Harry for a moment, before turning and bustling down the aisle.

Mackenzie took five tries to get the right wand. Harry, however, went through almost every wand in the shop, until-

"Holly, 11 inches, nice and supple, and..." Ollivander paused, "Pheonix tail-feather."

Harry took the wand, and purple sparks erupted from the wand. As Ollivander accepted the galleons from Remus, he stared at Harry, muttering.

"Curious, curious..."

"Sorry, but, er, what's curious?" Harry asked.

Ollivander dropped the galleons into the till, before turning back to Harry.

"I remember every wand I've ever sold, Mr. Potter," he began. "It just so happens that the pheonix who's feather is in your wand gave just one other feather. It is curious to me that you should be destined for this wand, when... why, when it's brother gave you that scar."

Mackenzie thought she saw Harry shiver.

"Well, that's all very nice and dramatic, but we'd best be going." Mackenzie took hold of Harry's elbow. "We've got some birthday presents to buy, after all."

"Very well." Ollivander was still staring at Harry, and Mackenzie could feel his eyes on them through the window.

"Well then." Sirius clapped his hands together. "Have you two decided where you want your gifts from?"

"The Magical Managerie!" The twins exclaimed in unison.

Sirius laughed. "Let's get going, then."

A bell tinkled over the door as the group of four entered the managerie. The twins wandered around, looking at all the pets. Harry stopped to chat with a snake, and Mackenzie paused to converse with what appeared to be a ferret.

"Hello," Mackenzie said, staring at the ferret. "I'm Mackenzie."

The ferret stopped shuffling around the crate and looked up at her.

I'm Serefina. the ferret's voice seemed to echo around Mackenzie's mind, rather than through her ears. Do you speak ferret?

"Apparently I speak a lot of things," Mackenzie muttered, "and this shop is full of very chatty animals."

Is that your brother over there? Serefina looked towards Harry.

"Yeah, he's my twin." Mackenzie nodded. "We're both looking for pets for our birthday presents."

He's mighty interested in that snake. Serefina observed.

"I bet I look mighty interested in you." Mackenzie retorted.

A tinkling laugh rang in Mackenzie's mind. Yes, I bet you do.

"Would you want to come to Hogwarts with me?" Mackenzie murmured.

Would it get me out of spending every day in this little cage? Serefina asked.

"Well, you'd have to sleep in it, but I'd make it comfortable." Mackenzie shrugged. "And you can ride around in my bag or on my shoulder, or wander the castle."

Then yes, I'd love to! Serefina sounded excited.

Mackenzie turned to Sirius and Remus. "Can I get this ferret?"

Sirius went to study Serefina. "I assume you had a nice little conversation?"

"Yes, and she really wants to come to Hogwarts with me." Mackenzie pleaded. "You guys did say anything."

"Yes, I suppose we did." Sirius nodded. "I suppose you can get this little lady. Harry's getting a snake, after all."

"Keep Sera away from both of them." Mackenzie instructed, as Sirius grabbed Serefina's cage and headed up to where Harry and Remus were standing with a corn snake.

"You're getting a ferret?" Harry asked skeptically.

"You're getting a snake." Mackenzie retorted.

"Touche'." Harry shrugged.

Sirius and Remus payed for the pets, and the twins left the store, the proud owners of Serefina the ferret and Hedwig the snake.

Hey, what's up, guys, I hope you all had a happy Easter.

So, I was sure I'd get some angry Hufflepuffs and Slytherins about what Mackenzie said to Malfoy. Let me tell you... I'm a Slytherpuff. Mackenzie has no problem with any of the houses, either, she just knew exactly what to say to push Malfoys buttons. I love all the Hogwarts houses. Please don't hate on me for what Mackenzie said about Malfoy. :'(

See you all later, my pineapples.
